What causes tooth discoloration?

Discoloration happens due to habits and physiological changes within the tooth.

Classification of discoloration of teeth:

Extrinsic discoloration:

This occurs when the outer layer of the tooth (the enamel) is stained by extrinsic stains from coffee, tea, coloured soft drinks or foods. Smoking also causes extrinsic stains.

Intrinsic discoloration:

Intrinsic discoloration happens due to the changes within the tooth structure during tooth development.
Causes include:
Excessive exposure to fluoride during early childhood causes mild to severe fluorosis

The maternal use of tetracycline antibiotics during the second half of pregnancy and the use of tetracycline antibiotics in children 8 years old or younger cause brown stains on teeth.

Traumatic discoloration happens when the blood supply to the tooth cut off during trauma. Your teeth become gradually yellowish then brown and black.

Developmental disorders like amelogenesis and dentinogenesis imperfect cause grey, amber or purple discolorations.

Age-related discoloration:

The enamel that covers the teeth gets wear off with age, which allows the dentin more transparent thereby tooth looks yellowish in colour.

No special tests are needed. A dentist can diagnose tooth stain by looking at the teeth.
If the discoloration happens due to trauma then the dentist may advice to go for x-ray even if you don’t have pain.

Extrinsic discoloration can be removed by teeth cleaning and polishing. In office bleaching and home bleaching also removes extrinsic stain.

Mild flurosis case can be treated with bleaching where as moderate to severe flurosis case patient have to go for veneers or crowns.

For medication induced tooth discoloration and developmental disorders veneers and crowns are the best treatment option for esthetic purpose.

Traumatic discoloration can be treated with intra coronal bleaching followed by root canal treatment / crown placement followed by root canal treatment.

Is Root Canal Treatment Painful?

A Root canal is a treatment to repair and save infected or badly damaged tooth
Root canal is the treatment to get rid of tooth pain. Root canal itself is not painful ,pain is because of infection in the tooth.

The procedure involves removal of infected pulp of the tooth ,cleaning and disinfecting area, then filing and sealing with medicated material and to increase the longevity of root canal tooth crown placement over it.

Before starting root canal treatment your dentist gives you local anesthesia so that tooth and surrounding area of that tooth are numbed and at the time of procedure you will not feel any pain. Sometimes if infection is too much then you dentist may prescribe you antibiotic prior to start treatment so that at the time of treatment you will not feel pain.

Once your dentist removed the infected pulp, you will not feel that much pain. After the root canal treatment most of the patient feel discomfort for few days while biting or giving pressure on that tooth, but that is normal. To get rid of that pain dentist may give pain medication for that.

If pain that doesn’t clear up after few days or come back again even years after treatment is not normal and could be sign of new infection so visit your dentist for that.

Cavity is known as dental caries or decay of tooth. it is an infectious micro biologic disease which causes dissolution and destruction of calcified tissues of tooth structure. Initially when decay is an outer surface of teeth(enamel) at that time patient may not feel anything but when it reaches to inner portion of teeth (dentin or pulp) then patient may feel sensitivity to hot and cold or pain.

According to study that bacteria is there inside our mouth for 24/7.The bacteria swim around the mouth and like to attach on the surfaces of the teeth and gums. When we eat sugary food such as (chocolate, cake, milkshakes, energy drinks etc…)They like to feed on the same sugary foods .after they feed they released the acid because of that acid ph level decreased inside the mouth.if it’s continue low ph level inside the mouth then tooth surface will be softened and over time there will be hole to develop on the tooth which is known as a cavity.

How to Improve the Whitening of Teeth?

Tooth whitening can be a very effective way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth without removing any of the tooth surface.  It cannot make a complete colour change, but it may lighten the existing shade. Whitening is among the most popular cosmetic dental procedures because it can greatly improve how your teeth look.

The most common reasons for teeth to get yellow or stained are:

Food and Drink

Coffee, tea and red wine are some major staining culprits. What do they have in common? Intense color pigments called chromogens that attach to the white, outer part of your tooth (enamel).

Tobacco Use

Two chemicals found in tobacco create stubborn stains: Tar and nicotine. Tar is naturally dark. Nicotine is colourless until it’s mixed with oxygen. Then, it turns into a yellowish, surface-staining substance

Below the hard, white outer shell of your teeth (enamel) is a softer area called dentin. Over time, the outer enamel layer gets thinner with brushing and more of the yellowish dentin shows through

If you’ve been hit in the mouth, your tooth may change colour because it reacts to an injury by laying down more dentin, which is a darker layer under the enamel.

Teeth whitening procedure involves:

Before starting, the dentist will make a record of the current shade of your teeth.

Your teeth would then be polished with pumice, a grainy material used to remove any plaque on the surface.

Your mouth will be isolated with gauze to keep your teeth dry. Retractors may be used to keep your cheeks, lips, and tongue well away from the whitening solution.

A barrier would next be placed along the gum line to further protect it from exposure to the solution.

Next, the teeth would be coated with a whitening solution on the front surface only. The solution typically includes either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide as the bleaching agent.

Many whitening products require a curing light or laser to activate the peroxide. Once applied, the solution would be left on the teeth for 30 to 60 minutes, or reapplied occasionally, depending on the brand.

Once the optimum shade has been reached (or the maximum time has passed), the teeth would be rinsed. A fluoride application may be used to help ease any tooth sensitivity.Additional visits would be scheduled until the desired shade is reached.

Instructions to be followed after the treatment: you would be advised to avoid foods or beverages with a high level of pigment for at least 24 hours. These include coffee, tea, tomato sauce, tomato juice, yellow mustard, beets, black grapes, candies, and red wine. Smoking or tobacco of any sort would also be avoided.
